N.I.E. number is identification number for foreign people in Spain (Numero de identificación de extranjeros). You will need N.I.E. number for example:

-  It is required for the residence car

-  Contracts with companies (for example mobile phone card)   

-  Doing business with banks

RECIDENSE CARD

With residence card you can do everything what you can do with N.I.E number, but N.I.E. number is not always enough. This card is a size of a bank card, there will be you N.I.E. number, picture, address in Spain and finger prince on the back.but you will need it for WHAT ELSE, HOSPITAL?

Residence card for European Union citizens is always for 5 years and then it has to be renewed. From other countries it is firs for one year and then for 5 as well.

PADRON (Empadronamiento)

Padron is a form how you register on the area where you live. It is really important to get the pardon. Reason for that is that the government has to know how many citizens are living in that area for maintenance all the services and infrastructure. Government makes the budgets for the maintenance according the information they have about the population (per capita). And if there are a lot of not registered people living in the area, the maintenance can not work, and these affect for many issues, for example

-  the streets and the traffic

-  Bomberos (Fire department

-  Ambulances

-  Long waiting times to go to doctor, hospital and physiotherapy etc.

 -  long queue for normal services for example post offices,

All this does not work effectively when there are a lot of people who are not registered.

Padron is required as well

-  When purchase a car in Spain

-   For hospital card

Padron can be applied from Ayuntamiento of that town where you live. The documents you need are:

Passport or Residencia card

N.I.E number

Rent contract (in Spanish with proper address, the same as electric bill, phone bill etc.)

Or if you are the owner you need escritura for your house
